October 14: Okay, this is more than a week ago, but Jennifer Lawrence wore the Salomon XA Pro Distressed Leather Sneakers with an Hermès Kelly. Because I’m now 10 months away from turning 30 and browsing Park Slope one bedrooms on Streeteasy daily, I feel called to buy these hikers and recreate Lawrence’s high-low, elegant meets “I actually do live in the world and have to run errands” energy. Step one was taking the Tom Ford-era Gucci bag I bought months ago for $108 (the greatest steal of my LIFE and my version of Lawrence’s Kelly) to Jim’s Shoe Repair for a clean up. I’ll show you when I get it back!
October 18: The Academy Museum Gala took place in Los Angeles. The evening raises money for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, to support its exhibitions and public programming, among other things. We’ll get into my best dressed in the monthly recap.
October 20: I am receiving reports that the Toronto Blue Jays have made it to the World Series. As a Canadian, I’m obliged to say: good for them.
October 21: Speaking of Hermès, Grace Wales Bonner was named the French fashion house’s new creative director of men’s wear. I feel as Rachel Seville Tashjian does:
October 21: The Dancing With The Stars resurgence has been perplexing me, so I watched this week. I think I get it. The stars are new — from Mormon MomTokers and Alix Earle to the crowd-pleasing Robert Irwin — yet the formula is so established and suited to cable. It’s comforting.
October 21: I spoke with journalist Rainesford Stauffer for her latest piece in The Washington Post. Stauffer writes about Gen Z’s shared antipathy to the workplace “emergency.” I’m a Zillennial, but my point stands.
October 22: The final NYC mayoral debate has come and gone. If you missed it, peruse Twitter for the content. And if you’re an American NYC resident, vote!!!!
October 22: The Row sample sale ran from the 22nd to the 26th. Scroll TikTok and you’ll know the truth within minutes: Sure, the pieces are great, but the length of the line to get in is tacky and the spot-saving is getting out of control.
October 24: Lily Allen dropped her first album in seven years. Album of the YEAR.
October 25: NPR reported on how folks in the rural South, particularly Louisiana, are bracing for medicaid cuts. “Researchers from Princeton University estimate that 317,000 low-income Louisianans could lose health coverage because of the new law. More than 30,000 Mississippians too; that state has refused to expand Medicaid.”
